As a physical therapist for over eight years, I have observed the workings of our medical system. Here is one common example that I frequently see: person has a symptom that leads them to make an appointment with a physician. Person goes to appointment and needs further testing. Person waits on test results, or waits for the call to schedule further testing. Person gets referred to a specialist for more specific follow-up. Person waits on that appointment because most specialists don’t have immediate openings. Person goes to appointment with new physician, and more testing is ordered. Person waits on results. Person gets prescribed medication and waits for prescription to be filled. Person goes back home, takes medication, and waits to feel better. After a few weeks of medication if there is no improvement, an order for physical therapy is given.
Let me preface by saying that I am thankful for the medical system in our country. I do not feel that all physicians are incompetent. I am not anti-medication; sometimes it is extremely important. What I do feel is that sometimes the order of operations is skewed and that patients become more of a passive member of their healthcare. In many cases, a person seeking help for a medical problem is bounced around, becomes involved in a series of waiting for referrals, calls, prescriptions, and is not given immediate tools to start getting improvement. This is why I created Empowered Wellness Physical Therapy.
Empowered Wellness Physical Therapy is a company for people who want to start getting help immediately. There are a multitude of approaches to improving physical conditions. My mission with this company is to provide a holistic approach to healing the whole body, while coaching people on how to combat a specific physical challenge. My logo is a venn diagram in the shape of a flower in full bloom. The diagram indicates all of the different pieces that are individually important, but that must overlap and work together in order to achieve whole health and wellness. The full bloom signifies a whole healthy person, a beautiful life. Wellness is not just the state of physical health. Wellness includes but is not limited to: nutrition, sleep, intentional movement, emotional stability, and community. When we have balanced aspects of each of these pillars of wellness, we will have a strong foundation of health.
My goal is to give my clients the tools to start addressing their challenge so they can begin the healing process immediately. I strive to empower my clients with knowledge so they can become active participants in their healthcare. As a women’s health physical therapist, I know access to services can be limited and the overall knowledge and referral for pelvic floor symptoms is lacking. If you or someone you know is struggling with postpartum challenges, pain with intercourse, urinary leakage, pelvic pain, or general health and wellness, I would love to talk with you! I offer free phone consultations so we can discuss what you are experiencing and see if virtual services will be the right fit for you. I can help you find a women’s health specialist in your area if you would prefer or need in person care.
I’ll step down from my soap box now! Just know that I am here for you for any physical therapy or general wellness and lifestyle coaching needs.
Take care and be well,
~Dr. Steph
